Guide to Backstroke Arms

Writer's picture: Paradise SwimParadise Swim

Backstroke arms can be quite the struggle for many beginners due to many reasons. Most commonly, swimmers struggle to break the habit of a forward rotation, caused by the previous freestyle practice. Additionally, swimmers may struggle maintaining a balanced body positioning on their back after removing the kickboard. Here's how we plan to fix mistakes...

Arms

To tackle the habit of a forward rotation and encourage a rather backward rotation...

We ask swimmers to reach for the sky, then for the bottom of the pool in a circular motion.

We ask for thumb out of the water first then to role the wrist for a pinky entry.

We ask swimmers to reach tall above their head.

Body Position

To tackle the struggle of a flat body positioning on their back...

We ask swimmers to lift their chin to the roof.

Likewise, we ask swimmers to lift their belly to the roof.

We ask for a straight and still head positioning so we can swim in a straight line.

We at Paradise Swim aim for your children to feel comfortable and safe when learning.
