At Paradise Swim, we encourage lessons to swimmers as young as 3 months. Of course, every little swimmer's journey is different; some starting lessons at later ages, such as 2-4. For swimmers ages 3 and above we initially will encourage an independent beginner class where the child swims with the assistance of their teacher.
Why? In our Parent & Baby classes we work on building trust between the teacher and the child whilst the parent is in the pool. This is to allow for a smooth transition once they begin independent beginner classes without mum & dad in the pool (this will happen around the ages of 2-3).
Although if the little swimmer begins lessons at ages 3 and above, we aim to build their trust and confidence by starting lessons in independent beginner classes. This will benefit the child's swimming development in three ways; the child will not become dependent on parents' presence in the water, the child will be surrounded by other swimmers of the same age, the child will build trust toward their swim teacher. These three factors ultimately will benefit the little swimmer's confidence swimming in the pool.
Of course, confidence in little swimmers is super important! Their confidence builds a foundation for their learning, which then leads us to focus on swimming ability.
Swimmers will begin swimming on the noodle, helping keep them afloat, but ultimately encouraging a flat body position on top of the water. This correct positioning is a great skill to master as it becomes the foundation for stroke development further down the road. Little swimmers will also practice kicking legs and reaching arms, to propel through the water. Finally, kicking on back will help the child feel comfortable swimming on their back (which can be commonly uncomfortable for little learners).
Our priority is always your child's development in the water, through both their confidence and ability
